Winning what you want may cost you everything you love…

As a general’s daughter in a vast empire that revels in war and enslaves those it conquers, seventeen-year-old Kestrel has two choices: she can join the military or get married. But Kestrel has other intentions.

One day, she is startled to find a kindred spirit in a young slave up for auction. Arin’s eyes seem to defy everything and everyone. Following her instinct, Kestrel buys him—with unexpected consequences. It’s not long before she has to hide her growing love for Arin.

But he, too, has a secret, and Kestrel quickly learns that the price she paid for a fellow human is much higher than she ever could have imagined.

Set in a richly imagined new world, The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski is a story of deadly games where everything is at stake, and the gamble is whether you will keep your head or lose your heart.

Rating: I am giving this book a 5 out of 5 Stars. First, let me start off by saying “WOW”. This book went beyond my expectations. I originally picked this book up because the cover caught my attention. However, as I started reading this book it was clear that this was a very well thought out world and characters. This is a story about a girl named Kestrel and she is a general’s daughter in an empire that loves war and conquering other territories. She then is at an auction and buys a slave by the name of Arin, who she finds a companion in, and something even more. The fact that this book showed the internal struggles of not only Kestrel but Arin as well helped to make the book that much better. The slow developing romance was also what made this amazing. I liked the fact that the two characters were able to get to know each other as well as develop a friendship even with the situation that it was. Without giving too much away, this is a great book and if you get the chance you should definitely add this to your must read list.  I enjoyed the overall experience of the book and the character development. A very well written book that you can’t put down the moment you start. If you are looking for something that is a dystopian, has fantasy, and romance book then this is one you should be reading.
