Review of The Jewel by Amy Ewing

Title: The Jewel
Series: Jewel Series Book 1
Author: Amy Ewing
Publisher: HarperCollins Publishing Group

Synopsis:
The Jewel means wealth. The Jewel means beauty. The Jewel means royalty. But for girls like Violet, the Jewel means servitude. Not just any kind of servitude. Violet, born and raised in the Marsh, has been trained as a surrogate for the royalty—because in the Jewel the only thing more important than opulence is offspring.
Purchased at the surrogacy auction by the Duchess of the Lake and greeted with a slap to the face, Violet (now known only as #197) quickly learns of the brutal truths that lie beneath the Jewel’s glittering facade: the cruelty, backstabbing, and hidden violence that have become the royal way of life.

Violet must accept the ugly realities of her existence… and try to stay alive. But then a forbidden romance erupts between Violet and a handsome gentleman hired as a companion to the Duchess’s petulant niece. Though his presence makes life in the Jewel a bit brighter, the consequences of their illicit relationship will cost them both more than they bargained for.

This book was nothing like I thought it was going to be. Yes, I read the synopsis and I felt like I understood what the book would be about, I was thinking almost like The Selection because of the cover, but I was very wrong. As I was reading this book I feel there were a lot of twists and turns and thing that I never expected coming. Especially the ending!

Rating: I will be giving this book a 4 out of 5 stars. It was a very interesting book. The author does a wonderful job creating her world and the emotional attachment that the main character has to the major and minor characters are thought out very well. The attention to detail was beautifully written and the world building was captivating. In some parts of the book it did get slightly slow from time to time and I lost some interest. What really made up for it was the way the author ended the book. I was shocked at the cliff hanger and I will be getting the second book just to see what happens to Violet.
