Review of The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle

Title: The Tiny Seed
Author: Eric Carle
Publisher: Aladdin

In autumn, a strong wind blows flower seeds high in the air and carries them far across the land. One by one, many of the seeds are lost — burned by the sun, fallen into the ocean, eaten by a bird. But some survive the long winter and, come spring, sprout into plants, facing new dangers — trampled by playing children, picked as a gift for a friend. Soon only the tiniest seed remains, growing into a giant flower and, when autumn returns, sending its own seeds into the wind to start the process over again. Eric Carle’s eloquent text and brilliant collages turn the simple life cycle of a plant into an exciting story, a nature lesson, and an inspiring message of the importance of perseverance.

Rating: I will be giving this book a 5 out of 5 stars. I truly love this book, especially for children who are learning about nature. I have used this book for a center and the students that I have shared this with love it.  The math center that I created was based off of the book The Tiny Seed. The students would use seeds as manipulatives to help them add and subtract. The worksheet is simple enough for the students to create their own math problems and the activity is definitely engaging for the students. I also had fun creating the direction sheet for the students by having it match the theme of plants and seeds.

For the Teachers: The standards that I used for this center are for first grade. MAFS.1.OA.1 which is the student will represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction, MAFS.1.OA.3 which is the students will add and subtract within 20, and finally MAFS.1.OA.4 which is the students will work with addition and subtraction equations. This math center is a great way to blend not only math and reading but math and science. The students are learning about science in the life cycle of a seed by reading the book The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle, the students are engaging in mathematics that are appropriate for their age by using manipulatives and the worksheet, and the students are also participating in a literature circle with the teacher by them listening to the teacher read the book orally.
